Display case for the big ones

Postby BoeingDriver » Mon Dec 21, 2009 5:09 pm

After years of letting my big travel agency models sit out in the elements and not being able to find suitable display cases at a reasonable price I decided to do it myself. This experiment is going so well that I will build more.

The problem with the big planes is finding a display with enough depth so I set 28" or 70 cm as my depth. The area I had to use measured 85" or about 2.2 meters along tha wall. Vertically I ran floor to ceiling leaving room at the top for can lights. Since I am not a wood worker the doors for the front are being fabricated by a wood shop. The top will be closed with a crown moulding and and smaller scribe moulding will be used where the sides join the wall. This is a built in unit and cannot be removed it doesn't matter to me since we have already named our house "The Final Resting Place."

If you can make straight cuts with a table saw and cutoff saw you can build something like this. The ends, top and bottom are 3/4" oak plywood. The back is oak beadboard. The front is trimmed out with 1X 4 oak. The shelf brackets are routered into the ends with heavy duty metal clips holding the 3/8" glass shelving. The unit is stained with Minwax One step stain which is easy to use and leaves a nice satin polyurethene finish. So far I only have about $800 in materials and glass--the glass being the expensive stuff. The thin frame oak doors will run me about $300 plus glass for finishing the front.

Here it is:

I just hastily filled up the shelves with various sized planes to see how I might want to organize and use this new display. The Raise Up EAL 727 is the largest model I have as far as wingspan and length so everything else will fit nicely when I finally decide which models will finally inhabit the display.

Cheers,

Ladd

Ditto!

I love the Raise Up S-55. Followed it once on Ebay, but larrymak was faster and richer...

Happy holidays and many new models in 2010!

The SABENA Sikorski was an interesting find. I had just moved to Omaha, Nebraska--it's a fairly large city in the middle of nowhere. My mission was to find out what might be lurking in the area. After checking out the local flea markets and antique shops I was depressed. Nothing. Zip. Nada. I placed an advertisement in the local newspaper describing the kind of models I was looking for. Nothing until about a month after the ad quit running. An elderly man called saying that he had an old helicopter which he kept after retiring as a travel agent in New York many years ago. He lived about five hours west of Omaha but would be coming to town for open heart surgery the following week and he would be glad to bring the model along with a SABENA poster showing the Sikorski and a DC-7. I met the old gent at the hospital and concluded a deal that seemed fair to both of us. The gent seemed happy to find someone who would appreciate his model since where he was living only farm toys and Winchester rifles have any value to collectors. This thing could have ended up as a doorstop!

Since then I acquired a Raise-Up SABENA DC-7 thanks to Larrymak. When I get things sorted out they will be together in the display case.

Yes, the old gent survived his surgery!

Indeed the Raise-Up SABENA Sikorsky S-58 is a nice travel agent model. I presume the only Raise-Up helicopter made, together with the older S-55 in SABENA livery. You can see the S-55 in the gallery of www.art-aviation.com (French collectors site).

I notice that Boeingdriver's S-58 has the same error as mine; the two passenger doors decal was applied on both sides instead of only the portside! My friend Ari Epstein (B) has one in his collection with the correct door application. He has also the rare S-55 in perfect boxed condition.

I just noticed the Lufthansa 737 you have. Is that a Topping model?

And the Braniff 707 on the lower right shelf... looks like the 1:200 Fermo model, am I right? Yours seems to be in very good condition, whereas mine does show some signs of wear...

The LH 727 is Verkuyl at a scale of 1/100. The Braniff 707 is also Verkuyl in 1/72.

The 707 does not have and never had the HF antenna. Still it is very accurate. Note the coloring of the window decals

The 727 is again a very accurate model. I like the scribe lines around the doors and cockpit windows. Because of those features you know it is much more than a rough casting that was buffed out and painted. I suppose it was fairly labor intensive to produce. You might say it is a little jewel!

Beautiful pieces!
I also like your choice of a "studio" back drop!
Was that because you were delighted with a find in a distant city?
