WOW! This alphabetical list of tin airplanes is most impressive.
This is complete and very professional. There's probably only
a few people in the country that know this much about tin lithography airplanes.
I like military tin airplanes very much.
I have two of the YONEZAWA REPUBLIC 48TH SCALE THUNDERCHIEF F105D,
although one is missing the horizontal stabilizer.
Again, many thanks for the remarkable lists. Have fun.
Regards, Richard

Is there any point in asking what 558, 561, 562 and etc were? ...or why they were omitted?

Well…the 561 was a motorcycle with a clown on it, the HK555 a jet plane, the 566 a jet passenger plane…. Maybe they just numbered them as they came along from the drawing boards??
design in the '50s was super was it not?

OK, well thanks for that additional information. When I find a list like that I often begin to search far and wide for the missing item. Sometimes they are taken out of the line early, are something entirely different (like the motorcyle), or sometimes just a skip.
Thanks again

C Trademark, "HI-SPEED"
Small toy planes made in Taiwan, Republic of China with a C trademark were sold at airport gift shops in the early 1990s. They are plastic with tin upper fuselages. The numbers listed are molded onto the wings. The smallest of them were novelty pencil sharpeners. They were unusual in featuring French airlines not usually chosen for toys. "Hi-Speed" should not be confused with diecast toymaker High Speed.

Airliners, Jet:

Boeing 737, 3 1/4" WS, friction, purple, red tail, red cheatline, white upper cheatline, "UTA" (Union de Transports Aeriens).
Boeing 747, 3 1/4" WS, friction, lavender, red tail, blue cheat lines.
Boeing 747, 3 1/4" WS, friction, blue, yellow tail, white upper fuselage, "Air Inter" "B-707."

Fighters, Jet:

F-16 Fighting Falcon (Suspected), 3" WS, friction, pink plastic body with white/blue upper tin overlay, "Marines F-16 Hornet" titles (the F-18 is the Hornet, not the F-16).
Straight Wing Jet (T-33), 3 1/4" WS, friction, green, pink tail, yellow fuselage with red/blue markings "Air France," "S192T."
Swept Wing Jet, 3 1/4" WS, friction, red, purple tail, blue fuselage with red/yellow markings, "Air France," "S353T."

CHEIN
Julius Chein Co. manufactured tin toys in a New Jersey factory beginning after World War I and continuing through the late 70s. Some of the firm's famous items include Hercules trucks, Mickey Mouse Ferris wheel and even a Stars Wars waste paper basket. The Martin 130 China Clipper was the firm's best plane: it was made in the 30s with and without the pontoons that enabled it to float, but its production might have resumed after World War II ended. Much more common are the single-prop toys.

Helicopter:

Toy Town Helicopter, 13"L, wind-up, two-bladed main rotor, no tail rotor fitted, blue with red and yellow details.

Light Aircraft:

# 39 Aquaplane float plane, wind-up, large tin two-bladed propeller, two large pontoons, lithographed passengers in windows, US insignia on wings, in the following color schemes:
Pale blue/green pinstripes, red details, green pontoons, lacks US insignia.
Red with white markings, red/white pontoons.
Silver with red and blue markings, red/blue pontoons.
Yellow with red markings, red/blue pontoons.

CHINA CAN COMPANY
"A trip into China's past, through its toys," a March 27, 2007 article in the New York Times by Sonia Kolesnikov-Jessop, reads: "By 1935, the China Can Company, which had first produced tin cans, had turned its attention to tin-plate toys and was producing toy planes, wind-up tin monkeys and other animals…During the Japanese invasion of the 1930s, war-related toys such as fighter planes, tanks and soldiers dominated production." A small Douglas DC-1 airliner may be this firm's product. It is similar to the small tin DC-1s made in Japan during the period, with "CHINA" engraved on the port wing. There is also a small plane with four propellers, silver overall with stenciled windows and blue/white Chinese nationalist sunburst insignia on the wings.

CIJ - COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLE du JOUET
Best-known to toy airplane collectors for its sturdy die cast series, CIJ became famous for its fine tin toys in the 1930s. As late as the 60s the firm issued a small, stylized jet plane similar to those made by the German manufacturer Höfler.

Airliner, Jet:

Jet liner, 10" WS, friction, swept wings with CIJ lithographed on them, cartoon bird on fuselage, four lithographed oval engine intakes on wings, white with red and blue markings, short red triangular tail fin, same tooling as Höfler brand Flying Saucer Airplane 132 made in Western Germany.

CLOVER
This South Korean firm is better known for its die cast vehicles. It issued some tin toys as well.

Airliner, Jet:

Boeing 747 #7027, 8" wingspan, 9" long, friction, red plastic jet pods, grey plastic lower fuselage, light blue Pan American markings on white fuselage and tail fin.

CRAGSTAN
Cragstan, a name collectors often misspell "Cragston," is one of many companies with offices in the Toy Building at 250 Broadway across from New York City's historic Flatiron Building. It is a toy distributor. The phrase "It's CRAGSTAN For Toys" appears on several Japanese tin airplanes in addition to, or replacing, the manufacturer's logos. Toys only identified as Cragstan appear below. The large DC-7 and DC-8 share the same fuselage tooling.

Airliners:

Douglas DC-7, 22 1/2" WS, friction, plastic props, silver/white, navy blue and red markings, United N71025.

Airliners, Jet:

Giant Friction Jetliner with siren noise, Douglas DC-8, 20" WS, friction, silver/white, dark blue cheat line and red tail, Northwest, same mold for President Jet, see NGS.

Fighter:

Chance Vought F7U Cutlass, 7 3/4" WS, friction, metal wheels, ten punched holes at rear for engine, removable red/blue clip-on wings, silver body, dark blue upper portions and sides, blue fins.
Douglas Sky Ray XF4D-1, 4 ½” WS, grey with red markings, blue upper fuselage and underparts.
Helicopters:

Navy Rescue Helicopter, 6 1/2" L, friction, 3-bladed tin main rotor in white with red bands, pressed tin orange pilot figure under plastic canopy, silvery-blue with yellow stripe.
Sikorsky S-58, 12" L, battery, blue/white with SABENA livery and registration OO-SHG.

DAISHIN DSK (MARUSYŌ)
Several stylized-looking friction toy jet airliners, and a few prop airliners, were produced by this firm and also by another identified as "NGS." Cragstan distributed the NGS toys. NGS: Nipon Goraku Shokai, a Japanese agent for Cragstan. The Straight Wing Jet Fighter is from the same tooling as the Momoya toys (see Momoya and NGS). In addition to the aircraft below, Daishin DSK issued a very nice battery-operated toy model of the 1969 lunar module Eagle.

Marusyo: Trademark is "MARUSYO" written across the wing of a single-prop plane outline, seen from above.

Airliners, Jet:

Boeing 727, 16" WS, lever action, rises on wheeled base, white/silver, red cheat lines, "Canadian Pacific" titles in black script, "Wind Empress" name on nose, goose in circle on tail, same as AA version marketed by Cragstan.
Boeing 727, 16" WS, friction, "deep" or "thick" fuselage, silver/white, Pan American.
Vickers VC-10, 16" WS, friction or battery remote control, silver/white, dark blue BOAC markings, also as Air Canada DC-9 (see NGS).

Fighters, Jet:

Straight Wing Jet Fighter (F-84), 14" WS, friction, wing tip tanks, silver, red and yellow markings, lithographed pilot, RAAF with kangaroo insignia, see Momoya.

DAISY MATIC
This US company makes toy BB guns, but it also imported a Japanese toy P-47 with a 15" wingspan. The detailed, accurately-modelled plane is mostly plastic and has action features. Tomiyama was the maker.

DAITŌ
Daito’s scale model of the Cessna A-37 is larger and more detailed than Nakayama’s. Daito converted its A-37 into a 1960s pop culture classic, Batman’s Batplane, and issued a matching helicopter, both very expensive today.

Fighter:

Republic P-47, red plastic pilot head, green camouflage, Japanese insignia, white JP characters on wings and tail, yellow wing leading edges and tail trailing edges, 5243 in white on tail fin.

Fighters, Jet:

Cessna A-37, 15 1/2" WS, friction, clear canopy, 2 tin pilot figurines

Helicopter, small, friction, plastic three-bladed main rotor, gold.
Helicopter, small, friction, plastic three-bladed main rotor, silver.

DAIYA (TERAI)
This Japanese manufacturer is renowned for its space exploration toys, so the inclusion of the Boeing Supersonic Transports in its line of toy airplanes comes as no surprise! Some of the graceful DC-7s were also released by Bandai. They remained in the catalogs in the late 60s, after the real planes had disappeared from mainline service. Daiya issued its smallest, 11" wingspan DC-7 as an Aer Lingus Viscount and in Braniff International Airways "pre Flying Colors" livery, which must have been very limited production, as they are most unusual for any tin airplane.

Airliners:

Douglas DC-7C, friction, plastic four-bladed props, in the following airline colors:

JOUETS MAGNIN LYON-JML
This prolific French toymaker probably did not export its products to the United States in any great quantity as the toys are rare. Some toy airplanes using existing 1930s tooling were reissued in the 1940s and 50s. One of these was a tri-motor airliner with wind-up motor and metal propellers and a 19 1/2" wingspan.

JOUSTRA
Joustra began its postwar production using existing 1930s tooling, with slight modifications to render its planes slightly more realistic. By the late 1950s, however, the firm had introduced its excellent tin airliners. Author Frédéric Marchand has listed a bewildering variety of Joustra toy aircraft in his book Avions-Jouets 1945-1970.

JUNIOR TOYS

Spotted in an on-line auction in 2015, a Boeing 747 SP in plastic with tin upper fuselage from the Japanese firm "Junior Toys," packaged in a box with Arabic writing. Supposedly, it was a sample for export to Libya. The toy rises and lowers on a black triangular plastic base under which is molded "Original Junior Product." The toy is similar to all-plastic 747SPs made in China in the late 1980s. According to the seller, "sindbad," "it has kadhafi's regime propaganda in arabic language."

Airliner, Jet:

Boeing 747SP, battery, 12" long, plastic with lithographed tin upper fuselage, dome light above fuselage and red and green wing lights.
-Iraqi Airways markings, two-tone green fuselage.
-Libyan Arab Airlines markings, gold cheat line.
