Louis Marx Air Mail Special

Postby Tone » Sun Sep 19, 2010 4:31 am

This plane has been in my collection since the early 90s. It dates from the late 1930s and has an 18 inch wing span. A simple key-wound spring powers the model and it still works fine today. Metal wheels ensure no flat spots will ever develop.

I have also seen photos of this toy as a biplane, and with metal two-bladed props. The fragile plastic pinwheels on this example spin very easily with the plane's slightest forward motion.

The plane reminds me of the Languedoc - the airliner that carried a rocket on its back. I am certain Marx did not have this plane in mind when it sold this toy.

Beautiful pieces...and I cannot for the life of me identify which aircraft it might have been. The Boeing 40B comes to mind, but that's a biplane.
Thanks (as always) for posting pics!

Exceptional condition, too. Very nice- I don't collect MARX planes but will make an exception for the 4 engine bomber version with single rudder {B-17?} in camouflage of that toy.
The company got a lot of mileage from the tooling.
