The DC-2 in gold was made in Japan in the 30s ... the DC-3 in chrome was made in China in the 2000s.

DC-3: friction drive toy

Nice toys, Tone. That Chinese one has a DC-2 tail though, no?

The box is marked DC-3 but to me it's a generic toy Douglas. The 30s tin plane is a far better replica of a DC-2 than the chrome toy model is a replica of a DC-3. It does recall the toys of that bygone era though, even with its friction drive replacing the wind-up spring motors that the 30s toy planes nearly always had.

The chrome plane has since been re-issued in a blue and red "Overseas Air Lines" color scheme. I saw a lot of them in NYC, FAO Schwartz even had shelves loaded with them three years ago when I last checked.

The general shape of the DC-2/3 has become generic for "antique airliner". I see so many items that are obviously DC-3 inspired but lack the spotting details.
