Siku plastic toys

Postby grwebster » Sat Oct 10, 2009 3:47 pm

The German toy maker, Siku, made in the 1950s an exceptional toy play set, with everything in the same 1:250 scale. When I say everything, the products in the range included airport vehicles, radio towers, wind sock, lights, hangars, terminal building etc.... But was really unusual was the range of airplanes they made, from the Fairey Rotodyne to the X-15, even a C-121....... all transports from the mid 1950s are represented too, viscounts, dc-7s connies etc....
I don't know if Siku distributed them in the USA but they do appear on ebay from time to time

I did find a few whilst visiting my daughter in Germany a long while ago,a Bolkow Junior and a nice Sailplane come to mind, these were aimed at the model railwaytypes which is very big in Germany, mine came in plastic bubble packs.

Here's my Viscount, I think the radar nose is a touch-up and not original.

I think the nose was a factory paint job, mine has it too, as does the Convair 440.

Here are some more Siku planes, all in 250 scale.

These are fantastic, I had a Lockheed Electra and a B-52, I loved this brand of planes.

Nice site! Good info!
...I can't remember making that post at Avia Mini...even whether I did or didn't!
Got a bunch of the Dubena pieces, and like a good modeler I intend to build them all!
Thanks for posting!

The play set is really unusual and exceptional! My 6-year old son really loves playing with airport vehicles every time. I am going to check on eBay about the good thing, my child can't wait it!

I was fortunate enough to receive a Siku Pan Am 707 and a KLM DC 7 for Christmas as an 8 year old in 1963
from a relative who had been in a shop in Germany.
Later I saw a whole Siku airport on display on a family visit to Germany in 1964, but the models were out of
range of 60s pocket money.
Many years later in 1987 I was working in Berlin and managed to buy a collection of Siku models in one of the
numerous secondhand shops devoted to Model Railway fans. These are a great source of models (I have a 1-200 Herpa
A300 and Boeing 737 in Lufthansa which I bought in a similar shop for a very reasonable price).
Even today I prefer 1-250ish models to the bigger 1-200 ones. I have some Aerominis which go nicely with the Sikus.
It is only a shame that Siku stopped the planes in 1964 when they went over to making models in metal. A few extra years and we might have had a VC 10 and a Trident to join the Comet mode.
At the Gatwick plane fair in 2003 I was able to buy some homemade balsa models in 1-250. The undercarriages still need replacing, but at least I now have some 1-250 BEA models including a Sikulike Trident.
Cannot do photos I am afraid as I am a techno idiot with gadgets.
