My MANOIL brand Planes

Postby Tone » Sun Oct 11, 2009 1:40 am

The Manoil firm founded in New York City became famous in the 1930s for its streamlined cars and lead soldiers. These planes were made in the 1950s. I know there were more colors and at least one other casting, a Bonanza. The prop on the Ercoupe and on the Navion are replacements. The black/silver jet is allegedly a Lockheed F-90. It is quite angular and stylized.

I bought the Navion in a local antiques center.

Tony, I think you are right - only these 4 castings were made post war. At least I have not seen any others so far.

I do have what I think is the only prewar Manoil plane they made, but don't have a picture of it here- looks kind of like the Navion on steroids.
I have found it interesting to collect the many color variations. The jet must also have been painted in these same color mixes and I do have a green and silver variation not shown, but these, as well as all the others too, i guess, are not often seen.

Now if Matchbox followed these attractive colours then they would be better all round, simple colours without frilly adornments.

I agree - that's why I love the mid to late 70s Sky-Busters "Made in England by Lesney."

Here is my last find- the Manoil F-90 in green and silver. The Manoil jet is not common

Top and bottom photos, I forgot to mention above that both propellers are replacements from Thomas Toys.

The F-90 is the only one of the three with unpainted underparts. Ironically, it's the one with the best paint on top !
