ASDA Jets

Postby angelreader » Thu Jan 21, 2010 11:31 pm

ASDA ( Walmart family ) had the MBX line in over Christmas and I went in every few days looking for ones that I needed, now to my surprise they have replaced that line with these jet packs, very rarely do you see airplanes in their UK shops so a real bonus, whose make are these please ?

They were sold as JA-RU brand toys in the US several years ago but I didn't think they were still around !

They are cheap kids' toys meant for PLAY and they do have plastic lower parts and funny-colored canopies.

Sold also as a generic on individual cards in the grocery stores here...but that was years ago! Yes, cheap imitations of cheap imitations...
On that same note...CVS has stopped carrying the Yat Ming planes under a store brand...but have replaced them with much worse generic crap...can't bring myself to buy them...glad I bought all the C130s, B47s and E3s that I did when I did!
...it's a sad day for finding cheap diecast toy airplanes in the drug or grocery stores...how things have changed in only ten years!
Even the KB Toy Liquidators have closed, ending the best source for "DynaFlite" generics...groan....

Yes that figures, because they are the same as some other generics purchased at another store called 'Sainsburys' in different packaging, everyone is cutting back on quality but charging more, these sell at £6 a pack, which I suppose today is pocket money prices !
More profit probably than the MBX range for the stores who benefit also from the advertising.

At least it's nice to see that the line is continuing...and that might be the first "toy" of the F-35 JSF I've seen!
Easy to dis stuff like this, but it's the essence of the typical toys that kids see today. They'll join us in 10-20 years....

I agree Michael, lets put this in perspective and think of these as 1930's cheap dime store airplanes finished in crazy colour schemes, generic they may be but they show how the miniature airplane has evolved, arrived and been downgraded ! better still what would you give to see that old dime store cache today ?remember what we find today is tomorrows history and collectables, its a crazy world.
Keep on visiting those local stores and hunting them out.

This Gordy "Radical Wheels" F-14 Tomcat #F835 appears to be similar to one included in your package. Gordy is a long-standing US-based distributor of Rack Toys, small cheap toys sold at grocery stores. The firm is most famous for its plastic copies of classic 1960s Matchbox vehicles such as the Ford Galaxie Fire Chief.

Note the variant: black trim around the canopy, different markings on the tail fin.

Why it is marked USAF rather than Navy is beyond me!

I don't think that planes are too bad to don't be considered as part of a good collection for Diecast warbirds as mine ;) . Yes, that planes maybe have altered parts or some mistakes in the design. (I have an YF-22 of JA-RU 1997's Real Wheelz that needed some repairs in the nose that was a bit slack) but with Super Glue in one touch I repaired and now is in very good condition. And that plane cost me 8 Nuevos Soles (About 2 Euros) in my country, Peru, where is very difficult to see Diecast planes in the stores. In England are more cute and better planes. But it's a shame that they don't come easily to be selled in the Malls of Peru :( .

I have the 2nd model of the left side box (the F/A-18C Blue Angel of the middle). I have the F-16A/YF-16 of the center box too, and a model of the J35Draken of the bottom down right is also mine. And that plane, the J35, is the reason of my nickname ;) :D
