The box is marked DC-3 but to me it's a generic toy Douglas. The 30s tin plane is a far better replica of a DC-2 than the chrome toy model is a replica of a DC-3. It does recall the toys of that bygone era though, even with its friction drive replacing the wind-up spring motors that the 30s toy planes nearly always had.
The chrome plane has since been re-issued in a blue and red "Overseas Air Lines" color scheme. I saw a lot of them in NYC, FAO Schwartz even had shelves loaded with them three years ago when I last checked.
