Movies with Models

Postby soslipstream » Tue Jan 18, 2011 8:26 pm

I just caught some portions of a movie with Cary Grant, Only Angels Have Wings. In one scene, there was on an office desk what appears to be a Pastushin ashtray model of a DC-3 or even the DC-4E, it was hard to tell since it was in profile.

It was kind of an "I Spy" moment and I started thinking about the possiblity of other desk models used as movie props. Seems I saw a couple used in "The Aviator" a couple years back. During the 30's and 40's, there were a plethora of aviation movies. It seems I recall seeing impressive chrome models is those as well. The Art Deco backdrops to those films virtually insisted on the presence of a shiny airplane desk model.

Is it worth creating a thread to start tracking some of these? I think it would be fun studying a movie just to catch that quick glimpse...

Today I saw "The King's Speach". The speach therapist's sons build scale models during the film. A model of a Fokker Dr. I hangs from the ceiling in his consultation room. And the Prince of York even gets a hand on puting some glue on a biplane model that the sons are building. There is another large model under a side table on the therapist's home.

* A couple of weeks a go I watched the original 'Airport' movie again. Good entertainment by the way, and in Burt Lancaster's office (airport manager)are some nice airliner models.

* In 'Air America' some nice models in the home of the chopper traffic pilot who after the loss of his licence starts as Air America driver.

Not from a movie but here's an interesting mid-60s image of the '21' club and its collection of aviation models hanging from the ceiling...

More recent DC-3 movies include Quantum of Solace and Congo. Lots of nice hi-def footage - although it is a movie...don't forget that...not a training film - they do take some artistic license. Also a brief DC-3 scene in Mulholland Falls.
Another hard to find movie is Jimmy Stewart in "You Gotta Stay Happy" with lots of DC-3 action, from 1948.
This can get to be a long list..

A couple of things to note about those models. They are all about the same size, whether a WWI plane or a Corsair, Spitfire or etc. They show obvious assembly, and many of the props are broken. I noted an Me-410 and a Junker F13 (or at least looks like one). I doubt they are metal as that would make for a much more difficult shoot - and expense. However, the Lintoy Me-410 with the cannon is a good candidate for that specific one.
I don't know of a 1/144 Me-410 kit, but Revell produced a number of 1/144 models. Airfix and etc could provide the 1/72 WWI planes.
I'd say they are simply common plastic models. Even the EKO models could be in there, but painted down to an even shade of gray.
Again, due to the high amount of damage shown, I'd think they are plastic model kits.
