NIPON GORAKU SHOKAI-NGS trademark in diamond (CRAGSTAN)
During the 1960s, New York's Cragstan firm imported a series of stylized-looking Japanese tin toy airplanes, in two sizes, with many variants made from similar tooling. The toys have no trademarks on them, only "Made in Japan." The boxes always are printed with "It's Cragstan for Toys" and "NGS" in a diamond. NGS is likely a Japanese export agent. One product is particularly clever yet simple: a series of three different airplanes, connected by metal rods, that appear to be flying in formation. The most elaborate "NGS" toy is a large battery-operated President Jet with detailed interior, based on the famous Raymond Lœwy design for the "Air Force One" livery but with a red cheat line instead of blue. The jet liners may have either a "thick" or a "narrow" fuselage when viewed from the side, depending on whether or not a larger or smaller lower part was used. DSK Daishin (see) issued some similar airplanes, and Yanoman issued a Japan Air Lines DC-7 based on the large four-engined prop plane tooling.

OHIO ART
Ohio Art, famous for its Etch-A-Sketch magnetic drawing board, has been in business since the early 1900s. The firm made a tin wind-up float plane with mildly-swept wings and a V tail. This toy had a long life span that lasted into the 1970s. The earliest examples came packaged in cardboard boxes, while later boxes had large cellophane windows.

Light Aircraft:

Float Plane, 10" WS, wind-up, 2-bladed metal prop, swept wings, two large pontoons:
Blue body, red and white striped wings, Coast Guard titles.
Red/white, blue circles with white stars on wings, Coast Guard titles, NX4010K.
Red/white/blue body and wings, yellow/lavender pontoons, lavender prop and tail, NX4010K.
Blue, blue/yellow wings, yellow tail, red circles with white stars on wings, Sea Patrol titles, NX4010K.
Red, white upper fuselage stripe with blue canopy, black/blue/yellow chequerboard pattern on wings, "8" on body near prop, "Hot Job" in late-60s-style "psychedelic" font, orange/black "eyeball" insignia on wings.

ONO
This brand issued the KA Toy single-prop fighter (see) in its own livery in the 1970s, with “ST” safety toy symbol on the box.

Fighter:

US Air Fighter, 8" WS, friction, plastic 3-bladed prop, chrome silver, red blaze and cheat line on fuselage, red/black chequer markings, blue control surfaces, Japanese insignia, “5” on tail fin in yellow.

PAYÁ
Payá manufactured tin wind-up toys, both before and after the Spanish Civil War / WWII, in a factory in Ibi near Alicante, Valencia in Spain's southeast coast. Another famous maker, Rico, was based in the same city. The distinctive trademark shows the Payá name in the shape of a vintage locomotive with smoking exhaust stack. Early toys included some single-prop airplanes and a constructor kit that could make a number of toy models, with 9" wing spans, three bars spray-painted on the wing tips, and crosses spray-painted on the tail fins using a stencil. These planes are fitted with single or double tail fins and one or three propellers, with the nose prop larger than the wing props. Payá post-war toy airplanes rarely appear for sale in USA, but beginning in 1985, Payá re-issued replicas of its 1930s toys as "adult collectibles." One of these is the Dornier Wal sea plane, "Plus Ultra."

Airliners, Jet:

Airbus A-300B, 12 1/2" WS, battery remote control or friction (8391), grey plastic lower parts, red plastic jet pods, silver/white, blue Air France markings including stylized wave crest on tail fin.
Airbus A-300B, 12 1/2" WS, battery remote control or friction, grey plastic lower parts, red plastic jet pods, silver/white, green Alitalia markings including stylized green/red “Λ” on tail fin.
Airbus A-300B, 12 1/2" WS, battery remote control (8790) or friction (8390), grey plastic lower parts, red plastic jet pods, silver/white, red cheat line, Iberia 1970s colors with yellow globe on tail fin.
Boeing 707/KC-135, 12" WS, grey plastic jet pods, blue/white/silver, "United States Air Forces."
Boeing 747, 6 1/2" WS, grey plastic lower parts, flat jet engines lithographed on wings, white with blue cheat lines, Air France titles, white speed bird on red circle on tail fin.

Helicopters:

12" L, 2-bladed plastic main rotor, silver/white with red and light blue markings "3-02."

"Caza," green plastic wings/lower fuselage assembly, lithographed tin upper fuselage, olive green/brown camouflage.
"Turismo," blue plastic wings/lower fuselage assembly, lithographed tin upper fuselage, yellow/red/blue, "UX-32."
White plastic wings/lower fuselage assembly, lithographed tin upper fuselage, white with red cross markings, "UX-35," "54-30-CN" titles in black, "Rescate Aereo 7022" labels on wings.

PAYVA
Around 1970 a Spanish firm called Payva, quite different from Payá but based in the same city, issued a set of six very small tin friction airplanes based on tooling used by the Japanese firm, S2 Toy (see). The planes came in a box with three hangars and a B-25 on the cover. Small tin friction Concordes with pinwheels visible through the upper wing surfaces were also produced in several color combinations.

PE PE
This Portuguese firm issued twin-engine airliners with three-bladed props and open windows. They are unpowered. The fuselage is molded plastic; the wings are tin. The main wheels under the wings are fitted with streamlined “pants” with molded rivet detail. The name “PEPE” is molded onto the tail fin. The toys are not based on an original prototype; rather, they are generic. However, the streamlined fuselage and tail surfaces resemble those of the HK airliners in shape. Span is 9” length is 8 ½”. Source: Jorge Bras, O Brinquedo Português. See also Armindo Moreira Lopes.

PICÓ
Another Spanish firm based in Ibi that made at least two very different-looking painted tin airplanes.

Light Aircraft:

Streamlined racer, 2-bladed metal prop, silver with red leading and trailing edges of wings, "Pico" on fuselage.
Single motor, 2-bladed metal prop, two additional small nacelles with no props on stubby wings, rectangular punched-out cabin windows, painted silver.

PIONEER INDUSTRIAL WORKS (PRIVATE) LTD CALCUTTA
This Indian firm produced a twin-engine airplane that is similar in size and appearance to early Bandai toys of the B-26 and B-50. The name of the factory is written on the box label along with ”Bomber Plane” “Automatic Mechanical Toys.”

Bomber:

Friction, raised flight deck at mid fuselage, two four-bladed metal props, punched out windows, horse in circle with gold wing logos on wings:
Blue, red nacelles, winged deer replaces horses on wings.
Pale green with red nacelles.
Red overall with green nacelles and props.

PLAY ME

Founded in 1969 in Beniparrell, Valencia, Spain, and best known for its die cast aircraft series, Play Me is known to have issued at least one tin friction airplane. This appears to be same as or similar to the Japanese-made Convair F-106 # 33 sold in US in header bags. The Play Me version was sold boxed.

Airliner, Jet:

#304, Convair F-106, 7 1/4" L, friction, blue, red details, US markings, "JET PLANE" in white on fuselage.

PLAYGO TOYS
Playgo Toys is a modern Chinese (Hong Kong) firm that made a plastic toy 747-400 with a tin plate upper fuselage and tail fin. The plane is fitted with red and green lights on its rather thick "winglets." A realistic 1990s-era British Airways color scheme indicates this toy predated the age of mandatory and prohibitive licensing fees.

PLAYWELL
Playwell manufactured tin and plastic battery airliners in Hong Kong in the 1980s. The DC-10 is a very nice model, similar to other Hong Kong DC-10s, but it does not have the opening cabin door, and the entire upper fuselage is tin whereas others may have plastic below the tail fin/engine assembly. In 1986 Playwell issued an all-plastic 747 in Lufthansa colors, made in China. It is fitted with a propeller that enables it to fly in a circle when suspended from a ceiling. The nose wheel/strut assembly acts as the on-off switch, quite the clever design.

Airliner, Jet:

Douglas DC-10, battery, plastic with tin upper fuselage only, silver/red wing engines with chrome intakes, grey tail fin with blue light, "DC-10" in black on wings,
-Alitalia, silver/white with green and red markings.
-KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, blue tail fin light, aqua upper fuselage.
-Lufthansa, red tail fin light, white upper fuselage, blue markings, blue crane in yellow circle on grey tail fin.

PRETUL AGATEX
Apparently Pretul was a Romanian factory. This plant produced an attractive Tu-104 passenger jet. The state-owned airline TAROM operated the 707, but neither the Tu-104 nor the similar but smaller –124. Pretul’s other aerospace toys included rocket ships.

Airliner:

Ilyushin/Iliouchine Il-12 or Il-14, friction, nose wheel, "NI 2196T-67 Agatex Pret Lei 39 Lot. IV.79." lithographed under forward fuselage, blue plastic 4-blade props, chrome cowlings, red markings on crown, white upper fuselage, blue cheat line, grey wings/stabilizers/lower fuselage, "Transporturile Aeriene Române" titles, narrow red/yellow/blue Romanian fin flash on tail fin with registration YR-AM.

Airliner, Jet:

Tupolev Tu-104 or -124 (Twin-jet) #17074-66, 17” WS, friction, nose wheel, pale grey, white upper fuselage, red cheat line, all lower case “tarom” titles YR-APC, Tupolev logo near nose, Romanian flag on tail fin.

PUKY
Made in Argentina

Airliner, Jet:
Aerospatiale-BAC Concorde, 12"L, friction, white, red and blue Air France 1980s-90s colors.

RTI
Possibly a brand from India, the RTI logo inside an oval appears on the starboard wingtip of an unusual supersonic transport lithographed in garish colors that seem to match those seen on Indian toy rocket ships.

Airliner, Jet:

Supersonic transport, 10" long, friction, "Spectro Rocket" on wings, intricate red/yellow/green/blue finish, lithographed pilots and passengers in windows.

RABBIT, see USAGIYA

REI
Brinquedos Rei (King toys) is a Brazilian firm located in the industrial development zone surrounding the inland river port, Manaus. Rei's trademark is a cartoon boy wearing a crown. This firm produced a nice tin and plastic battery toy of a DC-10 around 1980. The model is an original, good quality design. As the upper fuselage and wings are a single piece of tin, the wings do not detach from the body. The wide-bodied jet is finished in the accurate color scheme of the national air carrier VARIG, Viação Aereo Rio Grandense. It is smaller than a Nomura DC-10. A Boeing 727 in 1980 Mexicana colors, with gold cheat line, stylized lower-case titles, registration XA-TAC and a Mexican flag as part of its lithographed finish, was made in Mexico using similar tooling - allegedly by Industrias Plasticas SA (no trademark seen).

Airliner, Jet:

Douglas DC-10 Ref# G-8, 10" WS, battery, red light atop fuselage, tin one-piece upper body and wings, plastic lower parts (including wing engines) and tail fin, silver/white, blue lithographed VARIG Brasil colors with green/yellow/blue flag, Icaro winged woman in oval near flight deck, compass logo sticker on tail fin, PP-VRG on wings.

RICO
Spain's Rico manufactured high-quality wind-up toys, lithographed and decorated with stencilled, spray-painted details. Rico planes reflected the streamlined style of the 1930s typified by the elegant DH.88 Comet air racer. In addition to the twin-prop model of the real plane, Rico's DH.88 toys could also have a single or even three props. This plane was available in red, white, blue and green. Post-war Rico toys included a four-engined airliner resembling a Lockheed 188 Electra with four plastic discs to simulate the spinning propellers. The Chirri biplane is similar to the Nomura Grumman F3F Navy Fighter, whereas the real life Chirri was a Fiat model. In addition, Rico produced copies of Tomiyama's 24" long 1967 jet bomber design that it named La Sæta and La Sæta Negra (arrow and black arrow).

Airliners:

Four-engined Airliner, 13 1/2" WS, metal props, silver with red cheat line, round tail fin with red/yellow/red Spanish flag "fin flash" on rudder.
Four-engined Airliner, 13 1/2" WS, metal props, blue/white, round tail fin with red/yellow/red Spanish flag "fin flash" on rudder.
Four-engined Airliner, 13 1/2" WS, plastic prop discs, white with red cheat line, round tail fin with red/yellow/red Spanish flag "fin flash" on rudder.
Four-engined Airliner, 13 1/2" WS, plastic prop discs, green with white cheat line, round tail fin with red/yellow/red Spanish flag "fin flash" on rudder.
Twin-engined Airliner, 13 1/2" WS, plastic prop discs, "LAR" stencilled on wings.
Twin-engined Seaplane, 13 1/2" WS, two large pontoons, silver with red spray-painted markings.

Airliner, Jet:

DeHavilland Comet 4, 8 1/2" WS, friction, two external wheels for sparks, painted white, light blue or red painted wings, dark blue cheat lines, red square on white tail fin, BEA British European Airways, see also Yone-Ya.

Fighters:

Grumman F3F Biplano Chirri, 11 1/2" WS, battery, white 3-bladed plastic prop with red plastic cowling, silver, yellow upper wing, red tail, "VISTA, SUERTE Y AL TORO" motto in circle on tail fin with black cross on white rudder portion.
Single-engined Monoplane, 7 1/2" WS, two-bladed metal props, silver overall with painted red stripes and "Rico" in stencilled letters on wings.

Fighter, Jet:

Twin-engined Jet, plastic with tin upper wings, battery remote control, silver plastic jet pods under wings, molded blue plastic lower fuselage and tail, grey tin upper fuselage, blue tin plate upper wings with German crosses, lithographed pilots in canopy, LW-29.

Helicopters:

Red, same as GAMA 55 (see under Mangold).

Light Aircraft:

Piper Aztec, friction, clear plastic canopy, plastic 2-bladed props, white with red and dark blue jagged flame designs, R-28 on wings.

ROSKO
The "ROSKO TESTED" symbol of this US toy importer appears on boxes for some Japanese tin toys; the firm is not a manufacturer.

RUSS BERRIE
This American novelty gift distributor issued a small Chinese-made tin and plastic wind-up toy biplane in the 1990s named the Stunt Master. As the plane moves along the floor, it changes direction. It resembles the earlier Japanese Takatoku brand biplane and might be a re-issue.

ST SYMBOL
Toys packaged in boxes with this symbol were made in Japan beginning in the early 1970s. ST stands for safety toy. Japanese law or industry standards require this symbol; it is not a maker’s mark.

SAITO (or SANYO?) - S2 Trademark
Saito is the premier manufacturer of miniature tin toy airplanes. They are friction toys with wing spans of 3 to 5 inches, and marked with the trademark S2 (or, occasionally, TK) in a diamond. The styles and variants are numerous, often with interchangeable fuselages, wings, tail fins and friction motor housings. There are some models in common with Ichimura.
The earliest S2 toys date from the 1950s and have very thin wheels, but the majority of Saito’s output dates from the 1960s into the early 1970s. Production continued into the 1990s, but with a high degree of plastic. Some boxed sets exist. An S2 Convair 990 jetliner, with its four pointed wing fairings, is the only toy representing that plane, though many other models are nondescript or ambiguous in appearance – truly, toys.
A Spanish company called Payva (see) manufactured tin toy planes using Saito-S2 tooling in the 70s.
Factories in Eastern Europe may have turned out toy planes using ex-Saito tooling. There is a small yellow airplane with green/white/red bands and a red star on the nose; variants of the SPAD XIII biplane, one with Polish registration SP-PBK; and a four-engine Turkish Nekur brand jet with THY markings.

SCHABAK
The German firm Schabak has produced die cast airliner models since the 1970s. In 1990 Schabak also produced a tin and plastic Boeing 747 in a variety of airline liveries including Iraqi. The tooling was formerly used by Masudaya and Schuco (both see).

SCHUCO Schreyer & Co.
This famous German firm made one of the best-known aviation toys of all time: a large Vickers Viscount 800 Series that it named the Schuco Radiant 5600, and these titles are emblazoned on the starboard wing. The sturdy battery toy came fully assembled in a large box. Its plastic propellers start one at a time, rev together, and then the plane moves along the floor; one can set the propellers to run continuously. Schuco provided a removable remote-control steering unit and a tinplate tanker truck as accessories. Two pilot figurines made of molded and painted composition material sit under a plastic canopy. In production at least by the late 1950s, the Radiant 5600 continued throughout the 1960s and re-entered production in 2005. In 1967, Tomiyama (see) produced a Viscount of similar size and shape with a higher degree of plastic components. In the 1970s, Schuco introduced toys that were fine scale models of the 707, 737 and 747, with molded plastic bodies and wings and tinplate upper fuselages, in various airline liveries.

SCHYLLING
Schylling of Salem, Massachusetts has imported tin toy “collectibles” since the 1980s. All are sold in boxes that are clearly marked as “adult collectibles.” One set of Christmas tree decorations included a Dornier Seaplane, a Zeppelin, a generic biplane, and the Ryan NYP Spirit of St Louis, all made in China, but previously available from a German firm with a “ZZ” trademark. Other Schylling aviation “collectible” products are several variants of a wind-up Zeppelin based on a 1920s Marx mold and an original Douglas DC-3. Though these products resemble old tin toys, they were all intended to be decorative objects.

SHAN / ALEXANDER TARON
Alexander Taron is a 2000s distributor of modern tin toys made in China by a manufacturer identified as SHAN and "recommended for the adult collector." There are at least four aviation toys: the Dornier Wal Seaplane identical to the Schylling and "ZZ" brand Christmas ornaments; a looping biplane; a dark green biplane; and a single-rotor helicopter.
