I had forgotten about this book which features photographs from the Smithsonian's model collection, most of which is not on display.
at $8.50 plus shipping it is a bargain

You are right about that book. I have one and reference it many times a year. Which brings up a question. They include wind tunnel models as part of their coverage. Are there enough out there to collect?

tom, I have seen only a few wind tunnel models and they were all for sale in france. Very expensive and large, mostly made out of carved wood, metal fittings, adjustable surfaces etc.... no way they could be confused with, say a period desk model. These were of 1930s French designs but I haven't seen any from USA manufacturers.
We had someone on the old yahoo site who had some, as i recall, but I can't find the photos{ ...one more reason we started our own site.}

GW,

Steve Remmington from Collectair owned a Quarter scale B-29. It was just to big to manage so he sold it, and no surprise, regets it now. That damn hindsight!

No surprise with the author not caring. Why get excited when he's got paycheck and doesn't want to embarass his main bread-thread, the museum.

Ditto on the excellent box assessment...gorgeous photographs, and I can assure you that this is only a small fraction of the number of models in the NASM. Considering the enormous errors I see in books about toy airplane collecting...I'd let it slide and enjoy the wonderful photographs.
I'm sure the author cares...but this book is over 10 years old now and well beyond being able to do anything about it.
It would have been put to bed in 1994 or even 1993...even before the internet!
