Interesting Luftwaffe models

Postby angelreader » Sun Nov 08, 2009 11:03 pm

These may not be genuine ID models, however on the other hand they could have started as such ? I think GR will be interested to see these period models anyway,I found them historically interesting as they are original and painted with genuine Luftwaffe paints.

Barry, great article.
I suspect that those models were probably part of the 1:50 scale ID program, that he modified by adding details such as the engine cylinders in the cowlings, propellers, exhaust stacks etc.... and scribing the control surfaces.
Love the idea that they are painted in the original Luftwaffe paint from the period.

A nice story, Barry. GR's reaction reminds me of a store box in my collection, probably of German origin, with a sihouetted bottom for 4 models in scale 1:50. Would anyone know of more boxes of this kind and inform us where it could have originated? Storage for wooden Wikings? I will send in a picture as soon as I know how...

Bob this is what to do-Go to Photobucket.com and create an account there,it is free and reliable, after this upload some pictures to their site,as many as you like, after uploading you will see a box at the bottom, hover your mouse over it and you will see the legend 'copied' appear, this is then transferred here into the [IMG IMG] bit where the URL goes, you can copy it direct into your message,it then links direct to photobucket and appears here for everyone to see,if you get any problems just ask and we will assist you.

It's an interesting idea, that all these wooden models circulating here in Germany were made from former ID models. I will try to find out something regarding the (real?) origin.

One clue, unless it was covered over when modified to become a 'model', is the aircraft type stamped into the bottom of the wing. Generally the stamp is rather deep into the wood and every 1:50 Luftwaffe ID model I have seen has the stamp.

Also all of them have two holes close together in the fuselage bottom.

I wonder if all of the German 1/50-scale wood models started out as unfinished models which were then configured for different uses. Some were marked and painted as ID models. Others, like the HE-111 and ME-109B shown, seem to have been painted and finished as desktop display models. There were other usages, as well, which I will show later. I know they were not all made at the same facility, since many of the ID models have distinct, and distinctly different, arsenal marks on them which indicate the factory of origin. These two are nicely finished, and even have tiny aerials strung. I have seen others with the same types of stands, so clearly these were part of a series of some sort.
