Lacking two years of college required to join the U.S. military, Gentile joined the RAF, then later transferred to the USAF. Where he became one of the highest scoring fighter pilots in American history, with a total of 23. Eisenhower called him, "a One Man Air Force." His boss Col Blakeslee decided to remove him from combat after he crashed his P-51 while showing off to the press. Sent to Wright Field in Dayton as a test pilot, Gentile died in an air crash in January 1950, age 30.

Molland went on to become an ace and rose to the rank of Lt Colonel with 11 kills. He also flew combat in Korea in a T-33A Shooting Star, but perished in a weather related accident at Taugu Airfield in may 1951, aged 31.
