the USS Forrestal is perhaps best known for the fires and explosions
which rocked the vessel following a short circuit in a Zuni missle pod
Image
while steaming in the Bay of Tolkin, July 1967. 134 sailors were killed
Image
Gerald Farrier, a fire control officer was one of them.
Image
footage of his brave attempt to control the fires was captured by the
ship's deck cam

he is seen coming into the frame 25 seconds from the beginning of the footage, carrying a hand held fire extinguisher,
which he has the presence of mind to test fire before attempting to put out the A-4 engulfed in flames
Image
Farrier perished in the first explosion from bombs which cooked off under the A-4's pylons.
His body was never found.

3775 was destroyed in a crash landing at MCAS Yuma AZ following a mid air collision with F-4 153778 in 1977
