Ostermann's prolific scoring which started during the summer of 1941, had by March 1942, earned him leave to return home and get married. Small in stature though, Ostermann was arrested while on his way to the church by an overzelous police officer (how many of those were there?) who took him for a schoolboy masquerading as a Luftwaffe pilot.

Although an 'experten' Ostermann was severly wounded during the engagement where he recorded his 100th aerial victory in May 1942. but by remaining conscious, he was able to get home.

Ostermann's luck finally ran out near Lake Ilman in north west Russia, where he was shot down and killed on 9th August 1942, aged 24.
