Judging by the roundels it is an Italian aircraft. Never seen one before though

Would have been easier to identify if it had Brazilian roundels. Its probably an AMX jet light attack fighter prototype/proposal based of the joint Brazilian {Embraer}/Italian{Aermacchi} undertaking dating back a ways {1980s}. Your model maintains the AMX fuselage but the trailing edge of the wing is different. Several renovations/variations like the 2 seater AMX-ATA along the way have kept it in active service with the Força Aérea Brasileira, among others.
An even newer upgraded variant is now being built.

This is the only one I've seen by Fomaer or anyone else, I see the similarities but not convinced......it seem kind of unusual for FOM to made a one of a kind prototype model out of aluminum. I have a FOM AMX to compare and like I said see some similarities but too many others that don't compare. fuselage shape and wing shape are the most noticeable....I understand these could have been changed with the production aircraft....but wouldn't they have waited until after they decided on the final configuration to make the model?

I am sure you know, based on your large collection, the background of special, one-of, limited production design/prototype models, but in case not and for the edification of others I will try and summarize what I learned from the experts over many years.

Some times display model companies were paid to make limited models of protoype aircraft, especially by smaller aircraft manufacturing firms that do not have an in-house model department.
They have needs for a a small number of presentation models for military procurement staff, politicals, in-house use, and to hand out to VIPs.

I have a prototype Space Models military Canadair proposal of their CL 215 with hard points, radar pods etc. It came in a special hand made box with a pencil marking '#4 of 5'. I had an early U-2 variant by Space Models, too. I have two Bell proposals, several Boeing ones, most in special boxes.

Larry Mc Laughlin has a deep collection of these one-of, design proposals some having various design removable modifications represented in the box so that the model can be configured to represent different aircraft uses. Some included every possible weapons system, fuel pods, electronics pods that could be attached.

There many examples of these produced in the USA, and Topping was one the firms that did this. Perhaps Fomaer did the same thing.

At any rate when you find out, definitively, let us know.

Here are the two side by side and as you can see not only is it much longer but different wing, dorsal and horizontal stabs too. Nose is similar .....up to the canopy. Tell me what you think.
