US Schoolboy Wood Program Models

Postby ALetner » Mon Mar 15, 2010 7:29 pm

I've been looking through the topics here and have found a curious lack of anything associated with the US schoolboy wood program for ID models. I have picked up just a few in the 3 or so years that I have been collecting and I'll share these here. Along with the actual planes, I have managed to obtain a full set of A and B series plans and templates as well as a few C and F series stuff. A couple of other pieces of related material are the book by Emanuele Stieri, Building Model War Planes for the Army and Navy and the Supplement to the book which was a packet of the full size sheets 1-7 that have the templates for all of the planes A-1 through D-10. While enjoy collecting all the other types of WWII ID/Recognition models, I guess the thing I like most about these wood models is knowing all the effort the some kid on the home front put into these models as their contribution to the war effort. Below are a few photos from my collection followed by the plans & templates for each.

AJ - great information on a topic not many know much about.
I have some of these, too. A few are superb, some just ok, and one, a Zero as I recall, which was made by a famous duck decoy carver {I know nothing about decoys -and very little about the school boy program - but the seller showed me the signature under the wing- I never researched it but will one day}
I will post some pics of mine when I find them during the cataloging process.
Say, a question. Was the Boeing Clipper in this program? I have an old 1:72 hand made wooden one painted black and think it must be but never verified.
I assume you have seen Steve Remington's superb web site, if not see the Recommended Links forum.

Hi GR-
The answer is, Yes the Boeing Clipper was a part of the program. It was C-4 in the series and shows up on the 5th sheet of templates. What a grand model a well executed example must be with a wingspan of 25" plus. I have included a picture of the template below.

I'd like to see examples of some of the more elaborate models from that program. The bulk of the ones that I have seen are single engine fighters. The only ones I own that aren't are an Me110 and a Curtiss SOC-3 on floats that if the paint is original, would have been disqualified because it is painted in gloss rather than flat.

I also have a nice 1:72 model in dense wood of a Martin Mars. I was told when I bought it from a knowledgable collector friend, Dave Zeak, whom some of you know, that it was the master for a Cruver Mars, which was never produced. Not sure if I believed that story then or now but it is a nice model.

The USN Bureau of Aeronautics generated 90 such model plans and templates. All are available for free at http://smm.solidmodelmemories.net/Galle ... php?cat=13
My current collection of WWII ID models comprises of 19 aircraft to date. I prefer to go one step further which I call WWII ID Plus. The plus is painting and home made decals. An example is presented here.
